A2K (America2Korea) is a joint K-pop girl group audition project between JYP Ent and label Republic Records.

In A2Kep. 2, Park Jin-young told audition applicants that they should sing in their own voice.
“A lot of people develop a bad habit by wrong training. Improper training is worse than not being trainde. I`d rater meet a girl who wasn`t trained. You have absolutely no bad habit. You sing with your voice. And that`s a great place to start.”
What does it mean to sing with her voice?
In Jungkook’s Weverse interview, we can get hints about what it means to “sing in your own voice.”
In an interview, he says he wants to be recognized even if he sings in his voice when he talks. So he said he practices singing in his own voice.
In other words, having to sing in your own voice means that “the voice when you sing is the same as the voice when you speak.” This is what Park Jin-young, the CEO of JYP Ent, has said countless times. Park Jin-young also advised audition applicants on SBS’ K-Pop Star to “sing as you say.”
What does Park Jin-young’s countless emphasis on ‘singing as if talking’ mean? In ‘Sung Si-kyung’s Eating’ (YouTube), Park Jin-young once said that the singer who sings the best is Sung Si-kyung.
“I’m still a producer for six years from <K-pop Star> and I’m repeating myself a million times because I’m saying, ‘Please sing in your own voice.’ Since we usually exchange conversations, if the nuances of the conversation come out of the song, people can move their hearts completely! Who sings as if you’re talking the most? You, Sikyung!”
Sung Si-kyung’s song contains Sung Si-kyung’s signature. Anyone who has heard his voice at least once will immediately know whether it was sung by Sung Si-kyung or not when he hears a song.
He has a good understanding of his tone. He also identifies the range in which the tone can be beautiful and controls the sound. His musical sense is very high.
In other words, ‘singing as if talking’ means making use of one’s unique tone like Sung Si-kyung.
So what should I do to sing in my own voice?
Experts have some advice.
Sing with an accent.
Most people use Intonation when they talk. This is the same in songs. You need to put Intonation in the part you think is important so that the song sounds like you’re talking.

자신의 목소리로 노래를 부른다는 것(sing with her voice)은 어떤 의미일까?
정국의 위버스(Weverse) 인터뷰에서 우리는 ‘자신의 목소리로 노래를 부른다는 것’이 어떤 의미인지 힌트를 얻을 수 있다.
인터뷰에서 그는 말할 때의 목소리로 노래를 불러도 인정받고 싶다고 말한다. 그래서 자신의 목소리로 노래하는 것을 연습한다고 하였다.
즉 자신의 목소리로 노래해야 한다는 것은 ‘노래할 때의 목소리가 말할 때의 목소리와 같음’을 의미한다. 이는 JYP Ent의 대표인 박진영이 수없이 말해 온 것이다. 박진영은 SBS ‘K팝스타’에서도 audition 지원자에게 “말하듯이 노래해야 한다”고 충고했다.
박진영이 수없이 강조한 ‘말하듯 노래하는 것’은 무엇을 의미할까? ‘성시경의 먹을텐데'(유튜브)에서 박진영은 말하듯 노래하는 것을 가장 잘하는 가수가 성시경이라고 말한 바 있다.
“<K팝스타>부터 6년하고 지금도 맨날 프로듀서라는 걸 하고 있지만 내가 백만 번 되풀이하는 얘기가 뭐냐면 제발 말하듯이 노래해라, 말하듯이 노래해라, 우리가 평상시에 대화를 주고받기 때문에 대화의 뉘앙스가 노래에서만 나면 사람들 마음을 완전히 움직일 수 있다! 제일 말하는 것처럼 노래하는 사람이 누구야? 시경이 너!”
성시경의 노래에는 성시경의 시그니처가 담겨 있다. 그의 목소리를 한번이라도 들어본 사람이라면 어떤 노래를 들었을 때 성시경이 부른 것인지 아닌지를 바로 알 것이다.
그는 자신의 음색을 잘 이해하고 있다. 그리고 그 음색이 아름다울 수 있는 음역을 파악하고, 소리를 컨트롤한다. 음악적 감각이 매우 높은 것이다.
즉, ‘말하듯 노래하는 것’은 성시경처럼 자신의 특유한 음색을 살리는 것을 의미한다.
그렇다면 자신의 목소리로 노래하려면 어떻게 해야 할까?
전문가들은 몇가지 조언을 한다.
이를 알기 위해서는 앞서 언급했던 ‘성시경의 먹을텐데’에서 박진영의 말을 되새겨야 한다.

우리는 다른 사람이 우리에게 무엇인가 말할 때, 그 말이 진실인지 거짓인지 판단한다. 판단 기준은 ‘자연스러움’이다. 자연스럽다면 진실이라고 믿는다.
‘말하듯 노래하는 것’이 사람의 마음을 움직이는 이유는 자연스럽기 때문이다.
